Little Chambers Reaches 1,000 Kills as BYU Wins
BYU, ranked 25th, beat UCLA 3-2 in Provo. Marianna Singletary hit .556 for UCLA and UCLA hit .156.
Claire Little Chambers got her 1,000th career kill in the third set on Friday night, and No. 25 BYU beat UCLA 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-10) at the Smith Fieldhouse.
She is the 24th BYU player to reach a thousand and the tenth to do it since the sport went to rally scoring. She finished the night with 13 kills and 13 digs.
Fourteen of those twenty-four got there under the old scoring system. Little Chambers is the tenth of the ten who have done it since.
BYU put down 61 kills to UCLA's 55, dug 56 to 50 and hit .199 against .156. One team was a little better at nearly everything and it still took five sets.
BYU won the three sets it won by ten, eight and five, and lost the two it lost by three and five. Elli Mortensen had 16 kills, Sophia Callahan 12 with a career-high six blocks, and Alex Bower set 31.
Marianna Singletary hit .556 for UCLA with 16 kills and nine total blocks, and Brooke Harwood hit .364. UCLA out-blocked BYU 14 to 13 and hit .156 as a team, its lowest of the season.
Lola Schumacher dug a season-high 19 for UCLA and Jordyn Johnson made her UCLA debut in the third set.
BYU is 5-1 and UCLA is 5-2. The thousandth kill landed in the third set, which BYU won by eight, and the match went another two.
