Nebraska Sets Its Indoor Home Crowd Record
15,405 watched the Huskers sweep No. 20 Creighton at Pinnacle Bank Arena and beat a mark that had stood since 2009. It is still only the third-largest volleyball crowd the building has held.
No. 1 Nebraska swept No. 20 Creighton 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-19) at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday night in front of 15,405 people, the largest indoor home crowd in the program's history.
The mark it beat had stood for seventeen years. Nebraska drew 13,870 against UCLA at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on 13 September 2009.
The house was a sellout and the win took Nebraska to 8-0. Both local stations billed the night as the I-80 rivalry.
The Building Has Held Bigger Volleyball Crowds
Wednesday's 15,405 is the third-largest attended volleyball match at Pinnacle Bank Arena, behind a pair of AVCA First Serve matches played in Lincoln last season.
It was also only the third volleyball match Nebraska has played in the building, and WOWT reported that the Huskers are 3-0 there. The two bigger crowds came at a showcase the city hosted rather than at anything on a Nebraska home schedule.
Creighton's Best Moment Was a 12-12 Tie
Creighton drew level at 12-12 in the second set on a block. Nebraska answered with five straight points, a Harper Murray kill capping the run, and a Laney Choboy ace made it 19-13.
The Bluejays scored twice more in that set, and Nebraska had already hit .444 in the first and won six of the last seven points in it.
Creighton finished the night at minus .033, a season low, and goes to Friday on a three-game losing streak. Nebraska blocked nine balls, held the Bluejays to minus .065 in the opening set and to .000 in the second, and led the third from the early exchanges to the end of it.
Cogill Started for the First Time and Ended It
Kenna Cogill made the first start of her career, with Manaia Ogbechie out sick. She took eleven swings, killed eight of them and made no errors.
Her eighth kill is the ball that finished the match.
Andi Jackson led everybody with nine kills on .571 hitting and six blocks, and Bergen Reilly's 33 assists and 11 digs made a third double-double this season. Murray's eight kills moved her into eighth place on Nebraska's career kills list for the rally-scoring era.
Nebraska Has Spent 127 Weeks at No. 1
The Huskers played Wednesday in their 127th week at the top of the AVCA coaches poll, which WOWT reported is more than any program in the country has managed. The current ballot came out on Monday.
Nebraska plays No. 25 North Carolina on Friday at John Cook Arena inside the Bob Devaney Sports Center, which is where the 13,870 came from. Creighton is 5-5 and hosts Kansas State the same night.
Nebraska has now played Creighton twenty-five times since 1999 and won twenty-five. The biggest indoor home crowd in its history came to watch the twenty-fifth.
