Haak Scores 52, a EuroVolley Record 🌍
Sweden lost the first two sets to Croatia and won in five. The record Isabelle Haak broke was her own, 42 points, set in 2021.
Isabelle Haak scored 52 points against Croatia in Göteborg on Tuesday, which CEV says is more than anyone has scored in a match at a European Championship.
Sweden dropped the opening two sets and won 3-2 (16-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 23-21). Haak hit at 57 percent efficiency, and the record she broke was her own, 42 points, set in 2021.
A fifth set is played to 15, and this one went to 23-21.
Magdalena Stysiak led Poland past Slovenia with 24 points on the same day, and Myriam Fatime Sylla led Italy past Slovakia with 12. Haak outscored the two of them together.
Isabelle Haak, Sweden's opposite, spoke to CEV afterwards.
"It's nice to be able to help the team to a win, but breaking a record was really not a goal I had. Croatia went up to a 15-14 lead, and then they had the lead by one point for a while, until we turned it around."
Croatia's libero, Izabela Štimac, had just played a second five-set match in a week. CEV carried her too.
"We are all really emotional right now because playing two five-set matches is mentally very demanding. But we just need to calm down and focus on the next game."
Fifty-two points in a match Sweden was losing two sets to none is the best individual night of this tournament so far, and it took all five sets to be worth anything.
EuroVolley runs to 6 September across Istanbul, Brno, Baku and Göteborg. Italy leads Pool D with four wins from four and no sets dropped, and plays France on Wednesday.
