Canada Makes It Four Over USA
Canada won 22-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13 in the last pool match. Both teams finished on 110 points and 67 kills. The Americans play a quarterfinal this afternoon against an opponent the draw has not named yet.
Canada beat the United States 3-2 on Sunday in Santo Domingo, and it was the fourth time this summer that Canada has done that. The set scores were 22-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13.
Both teams finished on the same number of points, 110, and the same number of kills, 67. The Americans blocked more, 11 to 10, and served more aces, eight to seven. Canada scored 28 points off American errors and gave back 26.
Two points across five sets was the whole margin.
Logan Eggleston had 24 points on 20 kills, 16 digs and three aces. Avery Skinner had 15 points and a team-high five excellent receptions, Chiaka Ogbogu had 11 points with five blocks, and Stephanie Samedy hit 11 kills.
Jordan Thompson added nine points, Dana Rettke eight with two blocks and an ace, and Jordyn Poulter five with three aces of her own. Seven Americans reached five points and none of them reached 25, which is a reasonable description of the whole night.
The result leaves the United States 2-1 in pool play and into the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. Pacific on Monday, opponent still to be settled.
As the Los Angeles host the Americans are already qualified for 2028, so the continental Olympic place this tournament feeds is the one thing in the Dominican Republic they cannot win. What is left is a fourth look at a Canadian side that has spent the summer beating them, and the growing sense that the look is worth having.
